In early June a friend of mine got her PhD degree from Jyväskylä University and threw a dinner in the Aalto Museum cafe. I got the opportunity to make the flower arrangements. I’ve visited Aalto Museum cafe Alvari many times and dreamed about doing some temporary art in there. Such a simple and quiet place, perfect background for any piece of art.
I decided to use black color in the arrangements. So, while planning, I collected black materials and painted things black. I got more materials and ideas that I could possibly use in one space, so I’ve processed them after the event in Aalto Museum as well. Like the rock circles in the picture above are made after the event, using black rocks left over from the event.
I almost got obsessed with the rock circles and made this piece with candles as well at home, after the event. So where did I use the rocks in the Aalto Museum cafe Alvari. Let me show you. See, black rocks in water glasses. My dear friend Milja took the picture with her phone. We had to work really quick and taking pictures was not the first priority at the moment. It was Saturday and my two Save the Children volunteer kids ( aged 6 and 5 ) were helping me as well. Is it considered child labour? I hope not. But me, Milja and the kids had really fun doing this. We were a really good team. Everything ran nicely and we had ice cream after the job.
Pine painted black always works, so I did one piece with it. In early June the temperature was just above freezing point so I was able to paint the branches outdoors with spray paint.
Obviously, it needed some flowers, so I made a sketch with bright chrysanthemums. Sorry about my belly button showing in the picture taken by my daughter.
Too gothic for the event so I went for pinks. Again, a phone picture taken by Milja in a rush. The tree still looks kind of gothic and scary, doesn’t it. But the Aalto Museum cafe personal got so fond of it they wanted to keep it after the event. I was really flattered.
And what’s a party without flower arrangements with couch springs? We needed couch springs. Luckily, I live at the edge of the town and find plenty of abandoned furniture from nature. So I collected some couch springs and sprayed them black.
Now, if the springs are rusted they will discolor the water. But when making flower arrangements for a event that only lasts for a couple of hours you don’t have to use water. Because, many flowers will last a couple of hours without water. Chrysanthemums and carnations certainly do.
Simple couch spring arrangements is very easy to repeat and you can make it go on and on. You can’t see the couch springs from this angle so I made a a version with stronger colors this morning.
I wanted to something with spikey balls to the Aalto Museum cafe.
So I planned this. The balls are made of bbq sticks and jersey ”matonkude” . The tables in Aalto Museum cafe were small so I had to scale it down a lot. And the final result is here. Again, a picture taken by my dear friend Milja.
The PhD dinner project in Aalto Museum cafe Alvari was fun. Thank’s for the brand new doctor for trusting me to do it. And many many thanks for my lovely assistans, Milja and the kids.
